The story is narrated by William Ashenden, a writer who is asked to contribute material for the official biography of Edward Driffield, a once-radical novelist who has since become enshrined as a literary icon. Through Ashenden's recollections, however, a very different Edward Driffield emerges. . . one deeply tied to his first wife, Rosie, a woman whose scandalous vitality and unapologetic sensuality stand in stark contrast to the sanitized image being constructed by polite society.
