THE NON-RESIDENT INDIAN AND OTHER STORIES
The NRI is like a passenger in transit. . . always dreaming of arrival. The destination, however, keeps receding into the distance, as the protagonists of the stories in this collection discover. In Another New York Story, an Indian youth, born in America and yet uneasy there, pursues his version of the American dream, in the form of a beautiful woman, only to have the dream turn sour when he discovers that she is a famous porn star. In Das Bite, Sanjeev tries hard to transform himself into a brown version of the all-American male but has to call it a day when events take a wholly unexpected turn. And in the title story, Navin, a doctor who ostensibly has it all, tries, unaccountably, to commit suicide and decides to finally come home for a few answers. . .
