They said that being the marshal of Lawless was the next best thing to committing suicide. So the townsfolk gave the man who applied for the job fair warning. Besides, they figured that anyone who had hocked his horse, his saddle and his guns to get money for liquor was not the kind of man who could hold down one of the toughest towns in the West. But then the young stranger redeemed his guns and strapped them on, and the people of Lawless looked at him anew.
