Dean
Koontz
Ten of his novels have risen to number one on the
'New York Times' hardcover bestseller list (BY
THE LIGHT OF THE MOON, ONE DOOR AWAY FROM HEAVEN,
FROM THE CORNER OF HIS EYE, LIGHTNING, MIDNIGHT,
COLD FIRE, HIDEAWAY, DRAGON TEARS, INTENSITY, and
SOLE SURVIVOR), making him one of only a dozen
writers ever to have achieved that milestone. Twelve
of his books have risen to the number one position
in paperback. His books have also been major
bestsellers in countries as diverse as Japan and
Sweden.
'New
York Times' has called his writing
"psychologically complex, masterly and
satisfying." 'The New Orleans Times-Picayune' said Koontz is, "at times lyrical
without ever being naive or romantic. [He creates] a
grotesque world, much like that of Flannery
O’Connor or Walker Percy ... scary, worthwhile
reading." .'Rolling Stones' has hailed him as
"America's most popular suspense
novelist."
His books may be best described as ‘ Super
Natural Thrillers’. His themes are varied and
change from book to book but the underlying thread
is one of fear, horror and supercharged thrills as
the reader goes through a roller coaster ride.
Dick Francis
Dick Francis was a champion jockey
who won more than 350 races and was retained as
jockey to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen
Mother from 1953 through 1957. After retiring from
racing he has worked as a racing correspondent and
published more than three dozen novels and dozens of
short story mysteries, with the trademark of horses
being used in each tale. He is one of the UK’s
most well-known authors and has won numerous awards.
In almost forty crime novels since Dead
Cert in 1962, Dick Francis has focused upon people
whose lives are transformed by occurrences that
surprise them and are beyond their control.
His books always deal with the Horse
racing world and touch upon various aspects of the
profession Viz
:Jockey, Banking, Gambling, Training, Stud, art and
much more, the reader would never have been aware
off . His books are full of information and the
characterization of various players is distinct and
full of realism. The books are written in first
person and the reader feels a part of the racing
world as the mystery is resolved and the story
reaches its climax. His books are a joy to read and
reread.
John D . MacDonald
He is the creator of the famous
Travis McGee, hero of 21 best selling novels of
thrilling suspense.
Travis McGee might be the last
great heroic archetype created in the twentieth
century. The rangy rogue lives in-or-near Fort
Lauderdale, Florida, aboard his comfortable (if not
luxurious) houseboat, the 'Busted Flush' (so-named
because he won it in a poker game). McGee is a
'salvage expert'; he recovers money on a
contingency-fee basis for clients (usually
attractive young women) who have been rooked by
confidence tricksters. McGee's next-boat-neighbour,
Meyer, is a retired economist who functions as
MacDonald's literary alter-ego.
Home spun philosophy, combined with
realism set amongst the beauty of the wild Florida
swamps and wilder cities makes for compulsive
reading. Travis McGee is a moral person with the
tenacity and build of a tiger. As he hunts, the
reader hunts with him.
Books featuring Travis McGee
include:
The Deep Blue Good-by,
Nightmare in Pink, A Purple Place for dying, The
Quick Red Fox, A Deadly Shade of Gold, Bright Orange
for the Shroud, Darker Than Amber, One Fearful
Yellow Eye, The Last One Left, Three for McGee
(omnibus) ,Pale Gray for Guilt, The Girl in the
Plain Brown Wrapper, Dress Her in Indigo, The Long
Lavender Look, A Tan and Sandy Silence, The Scarlet
Ruse, The Turquoise Lament McGee (omnibus), The
Dreadful Lemon Sky, The Empty Copper Sea, The Green
Ripper, Free Fall in Crimson, Cinnamon Skin, The
Best of Travis McGee, The Lonely Silver Rain.
(Ralph
) Hammond Innes – Also known as Ralph Hammond
Highly successful novelist, who
published 35 books. Innes was a born story-teller.
He continued the great tradition of well-crafted
adventure stories, exemplified in the books by John
Buchan and Henry Rider Haggard, but added to his
work a strong personal narrative voice, a feeling of
real experience, and his love of untamed nature,
especially the sea.
The central theme in Innes's work
is man against the forces of nature. In several
stories the main character is searching the past in
a remote location. Innes traveled into many parts of
the world to ensure the authenticity in his works.
Travel pieces become for him a vehicle satisfy his
curiosity and to communicate the excitement he had
felt.
Ngaio
Marsh
Dame
Ngaio Marsh . one of New Zealand’s most remarkable
and charismatic women , was
world- renowned
as a leading crime fiction writer . She was
also an eminent Shakespearian producer and this
influence can be seen in many of her crime novels
also . She
has been consistently compared to Agatha Christie ,
Dorothy L. Sayers and P.D. James.
During her lifetime she penned 32 mystery
novels , every one a classic in its own right.
Marsh's
best-known character is Inspector Roderick Alleyn. Roderick Alleyn is assisted by
Inspector Fox who can quote Shakespeare. Later
Alleyn marries Agatha Troy, an absent-minded, thin,
shy and funny painter, whose character was not far
from Marsh's own in the 1930s. Like Sayers's Lord Peter Wimsey, Alleyn has a noble background, but instead
of becoming a diplomat he joined the police force
after returning from World War I. Some of her books
are set in a theatre back ground but most of her
novels are classics in their own right.
