Title: Tales of the Wolf

Author: Lawrence Sanders

This is a collection of 13 short stories that first appeared in magazines in the late 1960's. The central character is Wolf Lannihan who works for International Insurance Investigators (Triple-I). He is a womanizer who mixes business with pleasure, sometimes putting pleasure first. The stories depict insurance scams and how Wolf solves these cases. There is money, action, sex, greed, hate and jealousy involved. The stories are innovative and the insurance scams are original to say the least.

The stories are of mixed quality and length, some much better than others. Some of the plots are quite complex and devious, requiring Wolf to really tax his brain and body. Some of the scams are quite obvious but it is great fun to follow Wolf as he unearths the perpetrators and gives them their comeuppance.

Title: The First Deadly Sin

Author: Lawrence Sanders

Police Captain Edward X. Delaney, Commanding Officer of New York City's 251st Precinct, and Daniel Blank, a young business executive, a mountain climber, who has an extreme penchant for order, and strange sexual fantasies, are the primary focus of this thriller mystery. The case deals with solving a series of bizarre murders, and understanding the intimacy that exists between the killer and his victim; between the detective and his suspect. Lawrence Sanders develops the two central characters in detail going into their psychological profile and motivations.

Captain Delaney takes a leave of absence to care for his hospitalized wife of 30-plus years. During his leave, a murder is committed, then another and another. Captain Delaney is assigned to investigate these bizarre and brutal murders, which do not seem to have any connection to each other. As he investigates, he gets involved in a local power struggle and the pressure mounts on him to show results. Finally he tracks down the killer, but does not have sufficient evidence to get even a search warrant, what to say of prosecuting him. So what does he do?....

This is a slightly dark thriller and slow read. The author slowly builds the story, developing the central characters in detail before building up to a shattering climax.

Read it if you like a slowly developing story building to a fast climax. The action is subdued but at times violent.

Title: Day of the Cheetah

Author: Dale Brown

Keith James, the hottest pilot at Dreamland, a secret Air Force base in the Nevada desert, is the only man fully qualified to fly Dreamstar , a highly maneuverable fighter flown by computer software linked to the pilot's brain. But in 1996, James, a Soviet mole trained from childhood in his alter ego, steals Dreamstar . This fighter jet is state of the art  and must be destroyed or returned. The job falls on Lt. Colonel Patrick S. McLanahan in the Cheetah , an experimental F-15 fighter, must hunt it down and destroy it.  The Dreamstar is powered by ANTARES , the interfacing of the pilots nervous system with the aircrafts computer. The Cheetah is an older version , fighter craft , without this technological edge. But Lt. Col. Pat McLanahan has something that Keith James lacks - experience and knowledge which stems from wartime experience. It is a battle of nerves as the high speed chase unfolds. Pat must find a way to destroy the Dreamstar without a diplomatic incident and without starting a war.

Aviation buffs will delight in the breathtaking dogfights and air strikes. One must overlook improbable details, e.g., a computer tracking every synaptic impulse in the nervous system, bomber types leading a fighter research effort. Those willing to fly in Brown's imaginative skies can enjoy an exhilarating high-tech adventure. This is action at a furious pace , full of technical jargon and super stunts…
