Title: Banker

Author: Dick Francis

Banker is a tale of a young British investment banker involved in a syndicate financing . This profession may seem boring to some readers but the author brings out the finer points of investment banking.: the risks involved and the rewards that can be expected.

One of Tim's loans is to syndicate a champion racehorse getting ready to perform at stud. It seems a sure bet and the ‘shares’ are all sold out and the future seems secure. We lean about the  horse breeding business, especially from a financial viewpoint. The stud business is big bucks and although we are subjected to words like ‘ covering ‘ and ‘mating’ , it does not seem vulgar in the context of the fascinating world of  horse breeding.   When the offspring start to show birth defects, regularly, our hero is suspicious enough to practically start living at the stables and try to understand the issues involved and try to solve the mystery. When the horse owner's daughter, with whom Tim has developed an affectionate platonic relationship, is murdered, the mystery gets really serious. Are the TV celebrity horse "healer" and herbal remedy specialist and his "cooperative" veterinarian, bad guys or victims? There seems a suspicious link. Can Tim's pharmacist "girlfriend" help trace some important clues?  As Tim , works fast and furious, to solve the mystery and prevent the farm and his career from going into bankruptcy, the  reader keeps waiting for the next chapter.

An interesting sub-plot, concerns Tim's boss Gordon, who is slowly losing the war with Parkinson's disease, and Gordon's wife Judith. Tim finds himself in love with her , but is too much of a gentleman to act on his desires. Does his boss , suspect what is going on …

Dick Francis is at his best in ‘Banker’. We learn about, the investment banking and horse breeding business and the money and risks involved. The suspense is taut and the narrative thrilling……. A must read.
